  1. Flamingoes

From the recording Indian Summer

a dream sequence

Lyrics

Flamingos by Mary Rocap

Life is plain as an old black crow
Pecking in the fields of corn
Swoop and scatter in the evening
Caw caw cawing in the morn

I rise up early day by day
Gather eggs and milk the cow
Plant by moon and signs and seasons
Live by faith and sweat of brow

There came a storm I ne’r will forget
Mercy how the wind did blow
Unnatural did it rend the night sky
Never seen it hurry so

Blow. Blow. Mercy how the wind did blow
Blow. Blow. Never seen it hurry so

Closed the shutters and latched the door
Hounds were howling at the gloom
Went to bed with walls a-trembling
Praying Lord would send deliverance soon

In the morning all was still
Leaf and limb lay everywhere
Straight away I went out
To see how crop and stock did fare

I could scarce consider what I seen
Huddled neath the muscadine
Long of neck and long of leg
Pink winged birds, I counted nine

Where they came from and where they went
Is something that I’ll never know
But for proof they left a present
Feathers on the ground aglow

Blow. Blow. Mercy how the wind did blow
Blow. Blow. Never seen it hurry so
