From the recording Deep December Dreams

a December night sky; a re- imagining of the myths of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter

Lyrics

Jupiter and Venus by Mary Rocap

Thunder woke me up last night
From a deep December dream
I looked outside the window
Two stars and one moonbeam
Jupiter and Venus
Aligned in starry glow
I remembered what my father said
Thunder brings the snow

Venus came to Jupiter the brightest to the bright
High up in the heavens they sparkled with their light
The moon a shiny sliver gave a wink and nod
As Venus rose to meet her King to greet the King of Gods
He was the father of her love
Mars, the god of war
She did seek his blessing
For the love-child that she bore
Jupiter raised his mighty fist
Lightning seared the sky
Thunder roared across the night
She waits for his reply

I will not call you daughter for you steal my son’s good grace
He, alas, is smitten by the beauty of your face
I see you as you truly are another god-man’s wife
The love you give is stolen and will surely come to strife
This is not so – I beg you please
I bow before you true
My love is strong, and mine to give
Not yours to misconstrue
To prove the bonds of loyalty
I’ll come to you each year
Until you bless our union
Yet will I persevere

And so it is in winter she travels to her King
He thunders and he flashes and she her sorrow brings
Ten long days her tears do fall caught by winds that blow
Chilly winds that turn her tears to silent falling snow

Thunder woke me up last night
From a deep December dream
I looked outside the window
Two stars and one moonbeam
